Abstract

Effects of various parameters on the frequency of pollen embryogenesis in anther cultures of Oryza sativa ssp. indica cv. IR43 were studied. A combination of centrifugation (1000 rpm for 5 min) and cold treatment (100C for 10 days) of the anthers enhanced androgenic response fivefold over the control. Heat shock (450C for 5 min) and colchicine (50 mg/1) treatments also promoted androgenesis but were inferior to that of centrifugation. The frequency of green plants produced was distinctly higher in the first two treatments.
